Recent connectivity issues

Since a few days, the Dropbox version used in DropboxPortableAHK can’t connect to the Dropbox servers and shows a red cross on its tray icon saying “Can’t establish a secure connection”.
During new setups, the Dropbox setup starts with an error saying the proxy configuration is not correct. This is the same issue.

This issue might be connected to the recently discovered Heartbleed OpenSSL bug, but without an official word from Dropbox I cannot say for sure what is going on. I have contacted the Dropbox guys and am waiting for their response which hopefully will not take too long.

It looks like all Dropbox versions after 1.1.45 still work fine, so either Dropbox decided to pull the plug on old versions or they use a different way of connecting to their servers in versions after 1.1.45.

Until I got a reply from Dropbox, there is nothing I can do about this issue, sorry. Please be patient, I will publish an update on the site as soon as I got anything from Dropbox.

Update (17.04.14):
I got a reply from Dropbox today. They said they updated their security and that’s why old Dropbox clients can not connect to their server anymore.
This was what was already suspected by many of you.
I sent them a reply for any possible solution for newer clients and hope to hear back from them soon.

Thanks for your support guys :)

Update (23.04.14):
Yesterday, I received a reply from Dropbox again. It basically says that Dropbox version 1.1.45 is dead and will never work again. Also, they will not assist me in changing the Dropbox path on newer versions.
During the next days, I will investigate if it is possible to either decrypt the Dropbox database settings and use them on another computer or repackage the Dropbox client to not use an encrypted database at all.
Anyone willing to help, feel free to do some research :)

Update (27.04.14):
Good news, everyone! I am able to set the Dropbox path on encrypted Dropbox databases. This means, we can now use the latest available Dropbox client software :)
I only did a few rough tests to confirm that it works and have not a working DropboxPortableAHK release, yet. If everything goes well, we will be back on track again next week.

Update (02.05.14):
Just a quick status update after long hours of work today ;)
I think that it should now be pretty straight forward (logic wise, not time wise) to create a working solution using a Dropbox version up to 2.4.x.
During my tests today, my 2.4.11 setup updated itself to 2.6.18 and nothing worked anymore :( So I spent the last hours trying to find the reason for that and can now say that I think I will also get it to work on versions up to 2.6.18. However, the preparation for this will require a few additional hours during the next days.

Until then, thanks for all your nice words and your donations, I appreciate every single one of them :)

Update (04.05.14):
I ran into a few issues during the last two days, which made me scream at my screen, until I finally found the reason for these today. This took longer than expected, so the new version is not quite ready, yet.
I’d rather not give an ETA, but if I had to, I’d say soon-ish ;)

Update (13.05.14):
Beta versions will be shipped, starting tomorrow evening! (huurraayyy :))
The setup process works again and Dropbox starts up just fine afterwards.
Tomorrow, I will work on making it compatible with simultaneously running instances (like a regular Dropbox version installed).

Update (14.05.14):
The beta version just went live.
I sent a mail to everyone who signed up to receive a notification in the past.

Update (15.05.14):
Please do not ask for beta invites, this is not a public beta until I resolved some issues concerning the setup, as some people get confused how to set it up.
I will contact everyone who donated since April and was not part of the beta program anyway during the next hours, they should have an opportunity to see the current version if they want to.

The beta will go public with the next version, which will probably be the day after tomorrow. Any beta version will update itself to the next stable version, once it gets released, which will hopefully happen during the next days.

Please understand that I don’t want to spread the beta too much at this point, because there are still some issues that I’d like to fix before it goes public. There are only two days left, so please be patient :)

Update (19.05.14):
I am still working on improving the first beta. During weekdays, I can barely put time into this project, so everything takes a bit longer than expected, sorry.

Update (28.05.14):
Beta version is now publicly available: Beta v1.6.8.2

    • As a paying Dropbox user, I posted a trouble report, my reply was:
Thank you for your email! I would be glad to help.

I apologize for the inconvenience, but unfortunately your problem falls outside of what we can support here at Dropbox. You’ll have to refer to the customer support organization of Nion Software for resolution.

Otherwise, you might want to consider dropping in on the Dropbox forums to see if one of our users may be able to help:

  1. Thanks for the notice. I changed my password due to HB alert & thought I was going crazy doing something wrong; couldn’t get ahk to work again. Thanks for all your efforts regardless of the outcome.

  2. Dropboxportable has been very useful in managing and sharing my files. I hope this gets fixed very soon because not being able to run dropbox on a portable platform is very inconvenient.

I am searching for a temporary alternative but none has really come up with dropboxportable’s usability.

  3. Thanks for the notice and efforts.

It’s too bad, although Dropbox is a nice cloud service, we need third party apps like AHK to get it portable.
As alternative to using Dropbox portable via AHK, it’s an option to use Dropbox on your android phone.
I installed Dropsync (not the official Dropbox which, same as the desktop version, is way too limited) on my android device.

In the office where I can’t connect to the Dropbox server, I can use my phone via USB.

    JP

    • Dropsync is nice, but you really need a phone with a lot of space or a big SD.
To bad Samsung with kitkat caved in to standard Android, now basically you can’t use dropsync on any folder in your sd anymore, you can’t use any app including basic filemanagers on your sd anymore (only readonly).
Still considering if to root (solves the problem) or what to do.

    • Apparently the Samsung/KitKat issue in DropSync has been fixed as of version 2.5.13. I’m running it on a couple of devices and it’s working well.

  4. Hello,

First of all, thank you for the information. I was going crazy checking my firewall, proxy, etc.

You mention that versions after 1.1.45 are working fine. I am using 1.1.45 so if I install 1.6.8, will this fix the problem?

Thank you very much in advance. Best regards.

    • DropboxPortableAHK uses always Dropbox version 1.1.45, no matter what DropboxPortableAHK version is used.
You can not use DropboxPortableAHK with a newer Dropbox client.

    • Ok, I didn’t understand that point properly. I hope Dropbox replies you soon, this is a very useful app.

Anyway thank you very much for the info and efforts. Best regards.

  5. Dpahk is my favorite app and I really heavily on it. It is ingenious, Nick–bravo! I really hope you can find a fix for this.

  6. Using 1.6.8.0, same error message. Seems they want to kill dp. It is a nice little solution along with KompoZer to host a personal homepage. But business admins more and more are blocking dropbox-URL’s.

  7. Thank you for the info (and for all the good work you’re doing with this awsome app!).

Hopefully the DropBox staff will consider your request, and everything will turn out ok for us :)

Once again, thanks for your work.

    ED

  9. I also appreciate DropBoxPortableAHK ver y much . I fear , however, that Nick will take some time to solve the problem. As a replacement in the meantime I know 2 alternatives , which I also appreciate very much:
Team Drive portable and Cubby , see http://j.mp/1m1tNCP
    .

Team Drive portable even encrypts all files, whatever DropBox cannot. I will now install the official DropBox on C as an emergency solution , but only on my private computers is this possible. But would still like to use DropBoxPortableAHK again, as soon as possible.

Security & Access options Cubby (5GB free):

Data security is ensured by transfer with AES 256 -bit encryption. In addition, the data is encrypted on the client side again . The option Cubby Locks protects sensitive data by a further encryption (user -held encryption keys) .
    Source: http://j.mp/1m1tKXH

With the following link you can sign up at Cubby with 5GB online storage for free :
    http://j.mp/1m1tNTf

When one signs up so he gets 1 GB for advertising of friends for each friend, also several times you can earn additional space.

For Team Drive you get 2 GB of online storage for free with perfect encryption :

Free memory expansion via sponsorship by max. another 8 GB.
The free application is available via the following link :
    http://j.mp/1m1tNTh

Team Drive encrypts your files on your computer before it is uploaded with the algorithm AES -256. For each folder , a separate AES -256 symmetric key is generated.
Folders on your PC completely free selectable
Both with Cubby as well as with Team Drive portable , you can select any single folder (not just from a common directory ) for synchronization , as this is not even possible with the official DropBox .

I would be glad, if Nick could inform us per E-Mail, when we can use DropBoxPortableAHK again. Maybe he can invite to an E-Mail-distribution-list of all persons, who are interested in such quick information.

  10. I’ve had a dropbox personal account for a while and then my work setup a corp account. PortableAHK was perfect for the corp account so i could have both running on my work PC and home PC. Recently, ive notice our corp account offering the ability to connect my personal account. I wonder if this has anything to do with portableahk not working any more?

  11. other end users… I suggest we all send an email to DropBox directly to inquire about this. Perhaps with more pressure, they’ll respond quicker.

  12. Unfortunately I think the ride is over. Thanks for all of your hard work Nick, it was awesome while it lasted! :)

It looks to me like Dropbox is setting things up so that you can connect to your personal account as well as a business account so that they can pull the plug on portable solutions like dbpahk. It’s not in dropbox’s best interest to be allowing people to set up as many dummy personal accounts as they want. They’re trying to drive people to use their paid service to get more storage space. It only makes sense.

    • I don’t think the few people that really use many free accounts to avoid paying for more space matter to Dropbox. There probably are not many that go through the hassle of managing 5+ running Dropboxes just to save the money.

    • I agree with with Nick. This is not about saving money by having multiple accounts and being able able to run it in one PC. For me it is about convenience. Being able to carry the dropbox in a USB drive and run it in other computers without the need to install.

    • I agree too. For me it’s about being able to run DB where I can’t install it and running multiple paid accounts at the same time. It’s not worth the hassle of creating multiple 2GB accounts just to cheat the system. Besides, DB probably wants it so they can claim a big user base.

Nick, THANKS so much for DBPAHK! You made something that many people need and no one else made for DB or any other cloud service. I hope DB works with you on this and get this resolved soon.

    • For me, it has nothing to do with getting free dummy account.
I have a paid Dropbox account which I use for my business.
However, 99% of my time I work in customers offices where I can’t install or access Dropbox.
So to have to files I need for my work with me, I need a portable solution.
I would be willing to pay extra if Dropbox would provide a solution for this.

    • I agree with Nick as well! As I re-read my post, I realized it did not come across as I intended. I also find the most benefit in the portability it provides. I sure hope dropbox will work wtih Nick to re-enable his awesome software.

  13. This is a big disappointment and I hope a fix is found. DropboxPortableAHK is absolutely awesome, and now that it doesn’t run anymore I am very disappointed. I am a consultant and I work on various machines that are locked down. With DropBoxPortableAHK I was able to access my files when dropbox.com was restricted by the firewall. Now that I can’t use this tool I can’t connect to my 100GB of DropBox files.

  14. Nick – Thanks again for your great work on Dropbox Portable and I hope that Dropbox responds quickly to your request.

One other option to getting to those Dropbox files on a locked down computer is to use CarotDAV. While it doesn’t provide auto syncing like Dropbox, it does allow you to download and upload files directly to Dropbox and is a portable solution, requiring no installation.

Again, I hope Dropbox allows this wonderful program and service to continue.

  15. Nick,

I just wanted to say thank you for all of your hard work on DropboxPortableAHK. I use it to enjoy having my Dropbox on a high speed USB flash drive.

I hope that Dropbox provides you with the information you need, because it would be a shame to see your incredible project go to waste because of something Dropbox did.

    All the best,
    A thankful user

  16. Nick,

I’ve been using DBPAHK for a long time, thanks a ton. I use it on my PC because I have a shared free dropbox account with 3 friends that we all have for sharing files etc, then I have my own personal one which I paid for that I store all my stuff on. Now I have to drop one it seems which really sucks. Thanks for your hard work, and if anyone knows a solution to my problem please reply!

    ###english###
If you just want to run a second instance of dropbox, just use another Windows-Username. Install dropbox there and link to the desired Account. Then you can start this dropbox from your standard Windows-Username through the right-klick-menu “start as different user” or with the “runas” command.

  18. I propose, that all fans of DropboxPortableAHK should write the following request to
https://www.dropbox.com/developers/contact using the following head-lines in the input mask:
    ————
Subject: DropboxPortableAHK can’t establish a secure connection since April 12th, 2014
App name (optional): DropboxPortableAHK 1.6.8.0 (25.02.2014)
    Platform (optional): Windows (portable App)
    ————
Urgent request for rapid assistance to Nick, the developer of DropboxPortableAHK

For me DropboxPortableAHK is a very important variant of DropBox, necessary for thousands of DropBox-Users with no admin-rights on their (corporate) computer.
Since April 12th, 2014 , the Dropbox version used in DropboxPortableAHK can’t connect to the Dropbox servers and shows a red cross on its tray icon saying “Can’t establish a secure connection”.
During new setups, the Dropbox setup starts with an error saying the proxy configuration is not correct.
Details of the problem and many comments of fans of DropboxPortableAHK see http://nionsoftware.com/dbpahk/recent-connectivity-issues

    (A) Please give Nick rapid assistance enabling him to give DropboxPortableAHK the previous function to sync with our DropBox online memory. You can contact Nick at http://nionsoftware.com/dbpahk/contact .
    (B) Because it is very important for many DropBox-users without admin rights on one of their computers to run DropBox in a portable version, please cooperate with Nick by integrating DropboxPortableAHK as a standard version of the official DropBox in the future for private and corporate users. Otherwise these fans of portable online-memory-synchronisation-tools will be forced to change to other similar products as Cubby portable or Teamdrive portable.

Thank you very much in advance. Best regards.
A user and fan of DropBoxPortableAHK

  19. Hi, thanks for your work, I also use (and enjoy) DPBAHK a lot, on multiple PC (at the same time) with restricted account where I : won’t be allowed / don’t want … to install dropbox (personal files too).
I really hope this will be fixed soon.

  20. i have the same problem. is any solution for this problem? the icon in the corner appear cross and said “can’t establish secure connection”. what should i do now? thanks

  21. This is a terrific tool and I wish Dropbox is not considering shutting down the access. I just sent a support request to DB to provide a solution ASAP. This is the only way I’ve been able to use my DB files at work without having to install the software. I would pay for the app if you ever decide to launch it commercially. Keep up the good work!

  22. I just put in a help request with Dropbox. If everyone who reads this thread were to log on to Dropbox and submit a request for them to help Nick fix this problem, I suspect it would expedite the process.

  23. My entire life is flashing before me :( My work computer does not allow the installation of dropbox and this portable version has been a godsend. If there’s no solution to this then I’ll probably need to switch to Google Drive where there is still a portable solution.

  24. Hello, firsto of all, sorry for my english!

Because dropbox don´t give solution, why not make another portable aplication using this cloud solution http://www.meocloud.pt!

I’ve already try to convince them to develop the portable aplications… but i wasn´t so lucky!

Please consider this option! As far as i know, the meocloud aplication uses the same base of dropbox, so, maybe, half of the work shloud be done… i think!

The meocloud solution offers automaticly 16Gb! If some register by the following link https://meocloud.pt/?referral_code=ABkcX7hBoTafR9BFyrPMb3j9U together we will receive 512Mb extra!

Thanks to all for the attencion

    • Hello Nick!
      Thanks for all your efforts!!!
Sorry to insiste, but have you considerer this option / alternative to dropbox!?
      Thanks

    • The site you posted is in Portugese, which I don’t understand. I never heared of this cloud storage provider before, so I don’t think there is much demand for it. I’d rather go with Google Drive or another more established service, but I have not checked out any other desktop client beside Dropbox.

    • Hello Nick!
Yes, it is a Portuguese Cloud Provider! I don’t know what you need or don’t urderstand… i’m avalable to help!
I have already insist whith them to make a portable aplication! Sometime a go, they also tell me that they were going to stlabish contacto with you… and it was also told me MeoCloud has the same base of dropbox! If you try to install, the program has got multilanguage…
If you don’t kown, meo is a multinational telecomunications provider! I’m suspect to tell this, but is a trusty enterprise and with some tecnologicals inovations!
I’ll contact de MeoCloud team to talk with you!
Perharps isn’t now a very popular cloud service, but with the hungry of space of all this coments, maybe this became a well known!

    • Hi,

The service is fairly new is not very well known outside of Portugal (at least for now), but the team is friendly and open to third party solutions (e.g., their Linux clients are open source: https://github.com/sapo/meocloud-cli).

The apps (with the exception of the web app for now) support various languages and the desktop apps support many features you would expect from Dropbox:

      - Delta synchronization (based on rsync)
      - Data deduplication (only what was changed is transferred)
      - Proxy support/bandwidth control
      - Symlinks (even on Windows)
      - Windows explorer Integration

You could give it a spin and check it for yourself :)

Drop me an email if you’re interested in checking out the Windows version.

      Best regards,
      Joao

    • Hello Nick!
I’m glad to know that every thing is going on the right way!

Even i had make one good sugestion of cloud provider, i like very much the dropbox service, even more usinh it with your aplication!

Sorry for being a “pain in the ass”… but consider to portable your software to other cloud providers! MeoCloud is a great solution! If many people of these coments look better to this solution (Meo Cloud), starting imediatly with 16Gb, expandeblas to 32Gb free with invitations, most of tem should / clould change of cloud provider!

Mean while, i will wait for MeoCloud team to make a portable version of the software! :(

      Thanks for all…

  25. Nick,

If DropboxPortableAHK becomes obsolete, I will cancel my subscriptions with Dropbox. I currently have 3 paid accounts with Dropbox and have no need for their service if I cannot sync and access them all from any computer that I am on.

I have registered my complaint with Dropbox on all 3 accounts as well as their forum, which I noticed they have not responded to.

  26. Same situation here. I am a paying customer. Since my portable computer is an ASUS EP121 tablet I have to use a permanently mounted 128gb SD card for file storage and I have used DropBox to keep my work safe and synced. The loss of DropboxPortableAHK have made my work hell. I am going to have to cancel my paid subscription and look for other solutions.

  27. I hope Dropbox cooperates, but their complete silence so far is an ominous sign. I closed my Dropbox account because of this, and found TeamDrive to be an excellent alternative: Not only is the client truly truly cross-platform (I use linux at home, iOS on the road, and Windows at work), they offer a completely portable client for USB. Check it out: http://www.teamdrive.com/download.html (to get to the portable client, hover over “Primary Downloads” then “Windows”)

  28. Dropbox Support answered:

  30. HAb folgende Rückmeldung von DropBox bekommen:

    Hallo Pit,

  31. Hey Nick,

I just recieved this response from dropbox support. Can you confirm or update us on any news?

  32. I assume Nick would need further information from Dropbox developer support for being able to implement the portable feature again with a newer version of dropbox…

  33. Hello Nick,

Thank you for all your work. I just read that the “DropboxGuys” adviced you to use updated version. Hope you can fix this now.

Or maybe…have Dropbox buy your code???!!!!! So everyone can go portable! :-)

    Big hugs!
    Felixa

  34. Thanks for the excellent portableAHK. The world needs more generous/genial developers!

Wrote to DropBox, threatening to bring WW3 down on them if they don’t help you … Pleaaaase let us have our DropBox back ….

(Thanks again, whatever the outcome), Dan

  35. From my side also a big thank you for the development of DropBoxPortableAHK.
To give Nick some space to update and for those who need something portable with the opinion of automatic sync I suggest a workaround (works fine for me):
Sign in to TeamDrive, you’ll get 2GB for free.
Install TeamDrivePortable on the PC without admin access.
Configure TeamDrive that the monitored folder is your DropBox folder (e. g. MyDropBox).
This way you can continue using Dropbox as well as TeamDrive. You stay ready to use DropBoxPortableAHK again when a updated version is available.

  36. Here you can download TeamDrive 3 portable with 2.25 GB for free, latest version 3.2.0 (771) with 18.6 MB http://www.teamdrive.com/de/ref/rz7j2mqu . Another temporary replacement for DropBoxPortableAHK is Cubby.portable. Cubby also is able to sync your DropBox folder in the meantime, until DropBoxPortableAHK will be able to sync again. Cubby can sync every folder on your PC on different drives similar to TeamDrive.
Here you can download Cubby portable with 5GB for free, which also makes highly encrypted file-transfers: https://cub.by/i/01_TPW-voxTFXb. If your DropBox-folder is larger than 2.25 MB (TeamDrive) or than 5GB (Cubby), you can use Microsoft OneDrive with 7.5 GB (instead normally 7GB), if you use the following link: https://onedrive.live.com?invref=0b39c04749604a25&invsrc=90 . OneDrive has no portable Version, but you have full access to OneDrive on corporate computers without admin-rights for Notes with MS OneNote, and maybe online documents with Microsoft Office. If you have a very large DropBox folder with files not consisting of Notes, you should reduce the number of files, you synced with your DropBox until now. Since a few months. Microsoft offers OneNote for free

    • Thanks but we’re not interested in your personal gain links to teamdrive and onedrive. I’m surprised you didn’t link your cubby referral page. Oh and cubby isn’t portable. You provided no help whatsoever.

    • @Andrew 18. April 2014 – 01:33 (maybe a DropBox-employee?)
I use Cubby as a portable app since several month, and it works very reliable and more flexible than DropBoxPortableAKH because
      (A) you are free in selecting every folder on your PC and
      (B) data are highly encrypted and
      (C) you have 5GB for free (up to 23 GB: 1GB for each friend using Cubby)

For me it was not very difficult to find out, how to use Cubby as portable app:
Copy folder from C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\cubby e.g. to …\LiberKey\myApps and Cubby works as a very good portable app

So my information is a very useful replacement for DropBox, and I think DropBox would be good advised to see this competitor. If DropBox will not as soon as possible offer a portable service, many paying DropBox Users will migrate to cubby. My opinion is, that nobody knows, that Cubby IS a very good PORTABLE replacement for Dropbox.

  37. This tool is so useful, if the fix is complex I have no issue finding time, money or even more people to help get it resolved. I employ over 20 SW engineers and we do primarily OSS work – if I can, I would like to help.

  38. there are some ways to use dropbox portable

    The easiest way:.
On an external drive detected as a “local disk”
    download http://online.cameyo.com/public#__d.b._2.2.13

I used an earlier cameyo dropbox package without problems until i found the better solution via trial vmware thinapp with db 2.6.25.

    The setup
[prescan] install db location ext hd [postscan] [ok] …. [finish]
in total 13 clicks on the same position → http://11m.de/thinapp.swf#slides
important on the 8th screen:: tick • same directory ….USB…

If you don’t own an ext drive: change* a partition drive letter to the flash drive letter before the setup and change it back afterwards.

You will have less initial steps by using the 1st download @ http://google.cc/search?q=portablez+thinapp
This search page shows too an y.t. vid

    * [WIN]+[R] diskmgmt.msc

  39. One week without DPAHK. It’s terrify!! I have 3 computers desynchronized.

I use DPAHK with one partition protected with deepfreeze, and other partition with portable software. DPAHK is the best solution, fast, secure and use low memory.

Thank you very much for the work Nick. I hope resigned the solution.

    RK

  40. My Dropbox uploads and downloads at snail’s pace (around 7 KB/sec) even though I already set the settings to not limit the speed. This has been happening for weeks now. Is this still connected to the security update Dropbox implemented?

  41. Just wanted to say – I love DPAHK and whether or not you’re able to get it up and running again to the same level of smoothness (if at all) as before, I appreciate what you’ve done now and in the past. You have always been self-less and awesome about this.

Reminds me I’ve not donated in a while…Must correct this oversight. :)

    Thanks.

    Micha

  43. I rely heavily on dpahk, thank you for what you’ve done so far. I hope there will be a solution soon. Even if not, it was great. Thanks a lot.
    Nir

  44. Big thanks 2 Nick for developing and supporting DPAHK so far.

Just saw the April 17 update at top of this page that Dropbox have made “security changes”, so I have a question for readers:

If your machine is running WIN XP SP3 or Win 7 ,firstly, is dropboxPortableAHK failing AND ,secondly, if you answer “yes” can you tell me if the Google Chrome browser will login to your dropbox account on that same machine?

I noticed dropbox.com changed their SSL cert from SHA-1 to SHA-256 signing algorithm, and that change definitely breaks older systems. The above question will help determine if this is the only change. If it is I hope some bright coder can patch dropbox.exe v1.1.45 to work the right way. I’m ready to donate if someone patches it :-)
(I see little chance dropbox.com want to help people to use DPAHK or supply the same functionality in their product).

  45. Hey Nick,

Thank you for the work you had already put into this. I was wondering if you’re planning to try to fix it or not? If you can get this fixed, I’d be happy to donate! If not, it would be beneficial if you would let me (and probably others) know, so we can switch to another service (I know another cloud service that has an operating portable version, but I will have to switch all my files over if I do that)

I use DBpahk between all the different computers I have to deal with on campus, and having it was a huge benefit, and I would love to have it back.

    Thanks again Nick,
    Rob

    • Currently, I don’t know how I could make DropboxPortableAHK work again. I am waiting for a response from Dropbox, maybe I can figure something out then.

    • I agree wholeheartedly, Rob. Dropbox emailed me to say that they have been in communication with Nick, but I just saw nick’s response saying he is still waiting to hear from them.

It doesnt sound promising. Nick, will you be continuing to find a solutuion or give up on dropbox?

I will continue to monitor this thread and to hassle dropbox, but I really want and need a portable syncing solution, as my husband and I are taking our show on the road in a couple months. Nomads need dropbox to be portable.

    • They replied once, but I am still waiting for a follow up response.
Probably DropboxPortableAHK will not work again any time soon. I am thinking about creating a general syncing application that works for multiple cloud storage providers and uses their official API to do its work. This will, however, take a bit and might not work very well for certain providers, because their API is limited in some way.

  46. i found a more up to date cameyo version
    http://online.cameyo.com/pkg.aspx?pkgId=635209815805556932#__d.b.2.6.7.0
cameyo disadvantage: writes to the registry vos\dropbox instead of \dropbox

with portable carotdav its too possible to access the dropbox files
    http://rei.to/carotdav_en.html

I created too a 4min video: “portable dropbox via TRIAL VMware thinapp”
    http://screenshot.blogspot.com/search/label/dropbox

Another suitable device for a portable dropbox is a 1″ pocket/micro drive.

  47. I just want to add my voice to the many: Dropbox Portable AHK is unique and brilliant. It enhances the benefit of Dropbox for all of us mobile users – the users who are most likely to be IT professionals and have paid accounts with Dropbox (are you listening Dropbox). Take this portability away and Dropbox is less useful. For me it is almost useless without a portable capability as the companies where I work have very strong security policies.
Nick, if you can think of any way to encourage the guys at Dropbox to give you a bit more support then do say. Your work has helped us all so much and it would be good to keep it alive.

  48. Hallo Nick!

  49. Nick,

As others have said, Thanks for all you are doing! Without Portable AHK I would not have paid $99 for a Dropbox account. Hope to have this fixed soon or another cloud solution I will find, Yes. Currently working double time to keep up with all my files.
    Good Luck.

Nick, thanks for the great app.

  50. Nick, thank you so much for your efforts. I love your software DropboxPortableAHK it has been quite helpful. Hope this gets sorted out soon!

  51. Nick,

If Dropbox is not responding directly to your question about a solution. Maybe we can push for a response. I think that maybe if you update your opening post to request your fans contact Dropbox support to raise a ticket requesting a immediate response (directly to what your asking) we can get an official idea on if this will be a easy fix or expect something lengthier.

    What do you think?

  52. Hi Nick,

DropboxPortableAHK is an amazing app. I really hope that you are able to find a workaround – I will definitely send a donation if you do!

One thing I will say though, is that the first thing I want to do when I see the last status update was April 17th is email you or post to find out the latest news. Can I suggest you put out some kind of daily update, even if it’s just “still waiting for a response from Dropbox” ?

    Adam

  53. Hello
I was using AHK 2 years. Thanks.
So now I’ve switched to another portable version “Dropbox Portable 1.2.51 Development Test 2″ from http://portableapps.com/node/30683.
Although it’s 2 years old, it is working behind proxy without admin and installing.
And to avoid Dropbox tries to update, you have to replace content of some folder by updated one from regurally installed Dropbox.

    • I think this version copies your entire Dropbox folder to the user folder every time you start Dropbox Portable and copies it back to your portable folder after you have shut it down. This might work for the same computer or computers with the same username and Windows version, but it certainly does not work for all situations.
Also, it does not circumvent the encryption of the Dropbox database, so there are a few issues left. That is probably why the author does not support this version anymore.

    • Anyway, I’m started using that portable version “Dropbox Portable 1.2.51 Development Test 2″ and it’s working at least to some extent.

But I find annoying (and space consuming) its frequent version updating.

So, I would thank you, Lukas, to inform us of what contents and in which folder you have to replace to prevent that undesirable updating.

      Thank you, Lukas.

      Jose

    • As Nick already wrotes 1.2.51 copy Dropbox exe files to profile folder and starts it. After closing it deletes them.
It takes some second on start.
      And the update:
      - all except folder “Bin” from c:\Users\lj1078\AppData\Roaming\Dropbox\ to d:\Program Files\DropboxPortable\Data\Dropbox\”
      - all from c:\Users\lj1078\AppData\Roaming\Dropbox\bin\ to d:\Program Files\DropboxPortable\App\Dropbox\”

  54. Nick, (great app etc etc [I'm sure you know how the community feels about you work by now])
However, unless they (DB) have given you a workaround for the config encryption issue (or an unencrypted client that accepts the new cert) aren’t you are a stalemate?
Maybe ‘Dropbox Database Decryptor’ would help (but having a read of their site it doesn’t look easy). Either way anything any of us can do to help (from posted to DB to assistance coding) please feel free to ask. We are here to help as well as use your great software!

  55. For those using DPAHK on a machine because they don’t have admin rights, you can install the standard Dropbox software without any issues (although it said some features were disabled, I haven’t found any problems yet.) As someone who uses the same computer with a specific user account regularly but has no admin privileges , this is a very suitable workaround until DPAHK gets going again.

Dear Nick, thanks for such an amazing app and best of luck on the efforts towards fixing the encryption issues!

  56. Nick.

I’ve always taken your great app for granted. Never really considered the man behind the curtain as it were. I want to give you a big heartfelt thank you for all the effort you’ve done with this great app. I’ve relied on it heavily for 2 yrs now and it’s really been an amazing help. I sure hope you come to a solution. Don’t give up. I’d be willing to pay for this service. A lot of us would. HIGH FIVE!!!

  57. Hi Nick!
i wrote to the Dropbox guys asking them to give us back the possibility to use DropboxAHK and support you!
    They replied as follows:

“.. Our team has spoken with the developer of DropboxPortableAHK, and we’ve advised them on how to move forward in light of this issue. The app was built on a version of the Dropbox client that has since been deprecated, resulting in the problems you’re now experiencing.”

Did this really happen, or they simply wrote you that older versions do not work anymore and that’s it ?

I really hope you can find a workaround!
    All the best!
    Rop

    • They just told me that older clients are not able to connect to the server anymore by purpose. Also, they said that it is not possible to modify the Dropbox folder path on versions with encrypted databases (but we will see about that :) ).
The only thing that might go in the direction of helping me is that they advised me to use the official API they provide, but creating a sync application on top of that will be quite challenging, because I would basically have to mimic the Dropbox behavior, which is not even possible completely using the API.

  58. Hi Nick, I figured out that DPAHK is using the version written in the ressource of Dropbox.exe to check if it’s 1.1.45. I changed it to 2.6.27 with RessourceHacker and DPAHK tells me that it doesn’t support this version. I guess Dropbox are using a more complex way of preventing version 1.1.45, but in case it’s the case you could try to change the version number in dropbox.exe 1.1.45 and allows DPAHK to use it and see if it connects. My 2 cents contribution. If it doesn’t work (99% likely), hop that you find a better solution.

  59. This is very sad. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any vital information related to this problem, but I think that the Dropbox team will not help you as much as you would like to, because with this software that you’ve developed we have the opportunity to run many accounts in the same computer, with a bigger amount of space in total.

    Wish you the best.

    • or multiple corporate accounts (I have multiple clients using dropbox) and multiple (paid) personal accounts (yes, there are reasons for having them).

    • Currently I am focusing on a way to get DropboxPortableAHK back up running. I have not much time to look into another cloud storage provider until I am certain what will happen to this project.

    • Thx for the info….

How can I make it possible that this portable version is accepting my USB device.

Duirung process of installation I can not set the Dropbox folder to my USB stick.

      Thx in advance

  60. Their API presumably allows all functionality including their sync API. So a program could be written which simply accesses and syncs with the API perhaps?

    • I thought about that already. There are still some things missing in the API, though, to make it easier to accomplish. Also, there are still a few things that are not even possible with the current API, like delta uploads or initialization of an already present Dropbox folder.

  62. Hi Nick,

Firstly I want to thank you for your wonderful app. Creating DropboxPortable AHK you definitely find place in portable apps “hall of fame” :)

It’s a shame that Dropbox wouldn’t help you in some valuable way. This odd and unprofessional behavior of a credible company isn’t applied only on you but also for many people use your app to make a better experience of Dropbox.

Maybe my idea is not revolutionary, but if you find existing problem with DB can’t be solved, I suggest you to try make other portable app for some of the many services like Copy (15 GB free), or hubiC (25 GB free). I mean, Dropbox is my favorite service (I guess many will agree with me), but why to spent your energy and knowledge for some service you don’t even receive any help at all. I’m sure if you find the way to make portable apps for other services most of the people used your AHK will transfer to other services.

At the end, even you resolve the actual problem, who can guarantee that a similar problem will not occur for the very next DB update.

    Thanks.

    • COPY, that would be amazing – it has lots of free data storage and you get lots for referring others. It is by far my favourite cloud storage.

  63. This is sad. I may be wrong, but I believe that many DropboxPortableAHK users are paying for Dropbox service. I think only Dropbox can loose with this attitude.

Google Drive is now selling 100GB for $1.99/month (1TB = $9.99/month). I am now considering moving all my files to Google and subscribe to Insync Plus to use different accounts and support removable drives.

  64. I don’t think Dropbox realizes how many users are paying for multiple Dropbox accounts and using DropboxPortableAHK to sync the multiple accounts (like me). If Dropbox doesn’t start offering some cooperation, I’ll end up canceling my second Dropbox account (maybe both) and move to Google Drive or a similar service.

With that said, the only reason I’m still holding out is because DropboxPortableAHK is such an awesome app that fills a critical need for many Dropbox users. As a former software developer, I have to give kudos to Nick for creating such a great app to begin with. For each person who comments here, there are many others who feel the same but just haven’t commented. I would also be willing to contribute some money if it helped to get this app back up and running again.

I certainly hope there’s a fix soon, because I won’t be able to hold out much longer before I have to switch to another service.

  66. I was using Dropbox mainly because DB AHK.
At now, i move my files to GG Drive; it seems that Dropbox guys doesn’t help Nick to improve a useful service.

Bye bye and thnx for everything you did for us Nick

    Laurent

  68. Nick Wrote: “Good news, everyone! I am able to set the Dropbox path on encrypted Dropbox databases….If everything goes well, we will be back on track again next week.”

Ich drücke dir die Daumen! (I really hope I got that right. :-) )

  69. I would like to also voice my support for you Nick, I have used your program for years and have not had a second thought about it till now. I will definitely donate when another working version is made :)

  70. You’re a myth to me!
I’m checking this page every hour, just waiting for this news!
Now I’ll be able to restart working smoothly
…and of course: your supplementary effort asks for a donation!
    t

  71. Great news, I’m waiting for the latest release. Good luck with the tests. As many other of your readers are doing, I’m also checking this post almost every hour.

    Regards.

  72. Bravo Nick ! So great news for today! I just can’t wait for the working version and I’ll certainly denote when it is released

  73. nice one mate, donation coming your way!.. id be lost without this app.. must say I have just been using for years without realising the work required… maybe this is all a ploy to raise awareness and drum up some donations! ;) .. jokes aside, nice work mate, appreciated!!..

  74. You are a Champion! I have donated for DBPAHK before but a 2nd donation more than earned in recognition of your efforts if you can pull this off.

    Danke!!!

Wenn’s wieder läuft kommt ‘ne kleine Spende. Versprochen.

  76. Ref. update 27/04/14:

That’s fantastic news Nick. I’d only recently found DBPAHK and found how brilliantly it works. I’ve been checking for updates daily but unfortunately having changed my method of working in line with DBPAHK and with a solution not looking imminent I had reluctantly switched to an alternative which TBH doesn’t work anywhere near as smoothly so I’m keen to move back asap.

Keep an eye on your balance for my donation!

  77. You are awesome!

Good luck in fixing the issue and I think I’ll find some coins for a micro-donation, sometime soon.

It’s an amazing program/application, looking forward to using it again!

    A

  78. Looking forward to the new version! I’ve been experimenting with ownCloud and it’s not working very well … would very much like to go back to Dropbox…

  79. Sounds promising Nick – thanks for your work! DBPAHK is an awesome app – i’ve tried some file syncing alternatives in the last few weeks, but such a pain…
Looking forward to using it again!

  81. fantastic news. Will donate as soon as I try the newversion. in the mmeantime I found this CarotDav has a potable version that should connect with Dropboxhttp://rei.to/carotdav_en.html#abstract I have not tried it, though.
    all thebest

  82. Eleni, Apr 28 09:35 PM:
    Hi Joseph,

    Thanks for writing in!

Our team has spoken with the developer of DropboxPortableAHK, and we’ve provided him with further details about the problem.

The app was built on a version of the Dropbox client that has since been deprecated, resulting in the problems you’re now experiencing.

I encourage you to reach out to the developer of this app for further information on a timeframe for a fix.

    I hope this helps!

    Best,
    Eleni

  83. Wonderful! Thanks a lot Nick!
I donated before and will happily donate again.
The alternatives that I was trying sync so slowly compared to your program.

  84. Brilliant stuff!

I could only use your program for a couple of weeks because I didn’t know something like this existed. I can’t even guess how you could put such a magnific piece of software together, but it ran so smoothly! It made my job as a teacher much easier .

I hope we’ll be able to use it again soon.

    Thanks,

  85. Nick,

Good news! Are you thinking the program will run as it did before? Are there any notable changes in how it runs and works compared to before the patch?

Thanks for your hard work for us Nick!

  86. When I first found out about this, I heard it was running on an old version of the Dropbox software, & I thought that’s probably because development on it stopped & it wouldn’t work. The day I decided to try it out anyway was the same day this announcement was made that it wasn’t working. I’ve checked back every day since then for updates.

I hope the new version is working soon.

  87. I been using this for about 5 months and use it at least twice a week. I found a work around until nick fixes the problem but I would love to go back to dropbox portable when it gets fix it will be less headache for me when it works again. Can’t wait until you get the new version out.

  88. Nick, I´ve been living with your app since I-don´t-remember-when and almost got used to take it for granted, so I was taken by surpise
when DB closed the door to us. Now I´m happy to see you still have motivation to carry on. Thank you very much. Think I´m gonna throw a coin in too.

  89. Thank you for the good news. I appreciate your work and looking forward to the release. I’ve been using DBAHK with great pleasure and was really disappointed since it’s not working anymore. Hope you got the solution. Thanks, I’ll Keep my fingers crossed.

  90. I’m actually pretty disappointed in myself for not donating before, DropboxPortableAHK has been a HUGE help to me. When it stopped working earlier this month it made me realize how much I rely on it. Nick, thank you so much for your work, I just donated and I will make a point of doing so periodically in the future!

  91. Nick,
Just a quick post to say thank you for all your hard work. Just donated to support your continued efforts. I’ve been using your work for a while now and really, really appreciate it. Dropbox & TrueCrypt on my usb does me a world of good.

  92. Nick: Thank you for your hard work and dedication. On the bright side, this change has reminded everyone of how much they appriciate your work lol. I’m sure you’re getting more donations now than you have in a while. I know I’ll be sending something your way. Thanks again! And if you need any alpha / beta testers, I’ll test the shit out of that shit.

    • “this change has reminded everyone of how much they appriciate your work ” not only that but how much we all RELY on his work.

Funny how we don’t appreciate what we have until it’s gone. I certainly learned a lesson when it stopped working.

I shall make a donation to keeping this essential project alive.

  93. I’m very excited for the new release of DropboxPortableAHK! Expect a donation coming your way as soon as it’s released. :)

  94. Thanks, Nick, for your update of today.

Just a few lines to comment you my opinion that, as long as it works with the current DB server security, it’s not necessary that your DBPAHK version uses a very recent Dropbox version and even less that it be “updatable” (for it could happen again (like with 2.6 and 2.4) that a new future updated DB version ceases to work). If any future change in the DB server makes your currently chosen DB client version incompatible, then you’ll be able to investigate it and update your DBPAHK version. Anyway, probably all this is already obvious to you.

What I think would really be very convenient is a way to prevent DB auto-updates, as you were already attempting before the current issue.

Thanks for your so useful work !

    Jose

  95. Hallo Nick,

Guten Job.

  96. I’d be absolutely thrilled to see a new version of DropboxPortableAHK released this weekend!

Thanks again for all of your hard work, Nick! You make my life easier.

  97. Being someone of a geeky nature, do you think you could share what was the frustrating road block? It wasn’t a lost semicolon, was it? :)

    • There were three parts to the issue.
The first one was to recompile SQLite3 as a dynamic library, which was trickier than I thought. It worked fine in Visual Studio and I could run my test program (written in C) just fine with it. Integrating it with DropboxPortableAHK did not work though, the functions of the library couldn’t be accessed, because they were not exported correctly.
The second issue was an incompatibility between Unicode (used in DropboxPortableAHK) and Ansi (in my C wrapper functions inside the SQLite3 library). This was resolved rather quickly by comparing the bytes in memory :)
The last issue took me a while. I got weird errors when trying to access the database on succeeding call to the library, which I could not explain. The issue here was that the memory of the library and DropboxPortableAHK were not in the same address space. After loading the library into the memory space of DropboxPortableAHK, it worked.

I hope your geeky-ness is satisfied after this explanation :)

    • Thanks for the info! I’ve had some fun with SQLite3 db’s and I’d rather leave maintenance work to the experts.

I have ran into the Unicode vs ANSI problem before – you want to pull your hair out because the extra bytes aren’t displayed and looks EXACTLY the same!

I don’t even want to know how you figured out libraries issues. I’ll just remember it on my next donation time. You are a better person than me. It just means when I say “thank you” now I know how much harder it really is. But thank you. :)

  98. THANK YOU for all your work in getting this back up!! Your application has been a GODSEND for me this year with school. Only in the last few weeks of the application not working due to issues on Dropbox’s end have I found how much I appreciate this application. Left a donation. :)

  99. Danger – If I recall correctly Nick did look into the API but found it too limited; not capable of providing for the needs of DBPAHK.

Nick in recongnition of your efforts – another donation sent your way ;) Kudos to you!

  100. Thanks for the great work, Nick! Glad to know a working release is on the way in spite of the ordeals, especially Dropbox team’s reluctance to assist. You’re an inspiration to me! DropboxPortableAHK rocks!

  101. Yes Nick, your are my hero and i really can’t wait. Thank you for all your efforts and i promise: i will donate some bucks and promote to do so to all my friends, who are/had using your dbAHK….
    I can’t live without an portable db-version…

  102. Great work, Nick! I really appreciate all the hours you have spent on fixing this issue.

Keep up the good work. I’ll also make a donation soon to support, thanks!

  103. Hi Nick,

  104. Wow, seeing all these comments made me realize how big this program was, all around the world. Nick, you have done a huge service for all of us already, and we all thank you for it. Those of us who can have donated what we could (I apologize, I use DB free, and can’t really afford to donate more than I have), and I’m sure more donations will come in.

Your work is great, and we really do appreciate it. You have ~200 people who have commented about it, let along those who haven’t, all eager to see your work. Keep it up, Nick!

  105. I thought about waiting to flattr or donate once a new working version appeared.

Then I realized that I’ve already received a lot of value from using DropboxPortableAHK. It’s really helped to solve some headaches for me!

Nick, sounds like you’re dealing with plenty of headaches of your own to get this working! I’m sure you’ve put hundreds of hours into the software from inception until now, distributing it for free to help those of us who wish Dropbox provided–or at least officially allowed–this feature!

All, this is a very challenging time, with many impatient users, a nonfunctional product and Dropbox updates trying to prevent this from working. I think this is when Nick most needs our support and encouragement. I made a small donation. I encourage everyone else who gets value from the software to provide their own support! Rock on, Nick. I’m very eager to be able to use the software again.

  106. Thank you so much for all the work you are putting in. I really miss having the fantastic tool and I look forward to being able to use it again.

    Diane C

  107. Your software are very precious, i have used to autosyncronize tree servers: one in usa, one in italy, one in east europe
without your portable, the deploy and management will be more difficut, you are the best:)

  108. …just donated some bucks to give you some more motivation ;-)
    …just kidding
…i really can’t wait longer …can’t live without a portable version!
    Thks for all your efforts
    chrisW

  109. Your program is great Nick, and is missed dearly by many colleagues here at the university. Because we have severe ICT problems in our faculty at the moment, I just realized how much of a vallued fallback DropboxAHK was, until it stopped functioning. We are back to swapping USB sticks across the offices..

    Hope you succeed!

  110. Great work! Thanks for keeping it up… I love it when developers say “soon-ish”. In other words, “it will be done when it is done…” or “go away, I’m still working…” :)

  113. Fingers crossed, You have done tremendous work from which a lot of people benefited. Hopefully you will be able to put a new version together.

  114. Made smallish donation for motivation and to say thanks.

Thanks soooo much for the portable version!
    Vielen Dank Nick!

And screw them dropbox devs for not supporting portable version!

    • This should be possible with PayPal.l I received donations in USD before and could exchange them for EUR with respect to the current exchange rate.
Alternatively, you can let PayPal do the automatic exchange from USD to EUR during your donation.

      Thanks for your support :)

  115. Made a small donation as encouragement and to show how essential DB portable is. Keep up the good work, hope you manage to solve the connectivity issues in the coming days!

  116. Thanks for all the work you’ve put into development!

Great you accept Bitcoin, I will sent some Bitcoin your way. If you would accept Litecoin, I would sent you some too ;)

  117. Dropbox basically are forcing us to install their bloated crap. I am amazed that portable apps are not the norm, with local configuration files, so that we can just copy and paste a folder and we are done, no need to manually adjust any settings each time we install the app. I understand they do it in the interest of workstations with multiple user accounts, but in fairness 99% of users only have one account on their PCs. I realise some apps that need to run as services or rely on system components cannot be portable, but plenty of apps that could be portable and are not including DropBox. Idiots.

  118. Is your program not working now?
I have noticed that it is not synchronizing my files,
is dropbox made some change that restrict this program?

  119. Hey Nick,

I hate to constantly bug you with questions but are we days, weeks or months away from a release?

Just need to know so i can prep myself with a alternative until a release.

    • I thought I could send out a beta version, yesterday, but it wasn’t ready to be used.
Unfortunately, I don’t have much time I can put into this during weekdays, so the progress during the week is kinda slow.

It is hard to give an estimate for when it’s ready, because I don’t know if I already caught all the big issues.

  120. Hey Nick.. I can see that with every upgrade in dropbox, the portable app may have chances of faltering. So even by working hard (That you already are doing), you develop a solution for current version, the problem may again recur the next time db upgrades. I suggest that with such a wonderful, useful and popular application that you have developed, you should meet db guys and form some kind of partnership/JV. I am sure DB will be interested in incorporating PortableAHK as part of their standard dropbox feature, Do think in this direction coz I guess this is the only permanent solution

    • Hi Nick

    • I got in touch with Dropbox a few times in the past, but they never liked the idea of DropboxPortableAHK and did not give me anything useful.

  121. Hi,

I just wrote to dropbox as a user of original version when possible and of AHK portable version when required (office), asking why they would’nt help.

All this could lead to is to switch to another software.

Congrats for all you’ve done and still do.

  122. Hi there!

I am also a big fan of the portable version. I think it is important to keep on sending support request to DB. I did it like suggested in the comment above. Got some general reply about connectivity issues.

I copy my answer here in order that you can use it, too. In my experience it is important to get some escalation and to have someone high up in the DB dev hirarchy to have a look at it. So keep sending support requests (and donating for Nick).

    (…)
thank you very much for your reply, but I do think it does not catch the issue at hand.

I am asking for a support by Dropbox for DropboxPortable AHK developed by Nick at http://nionsoftware.com/dbpahk/contact.

To my knowledge, it is the only DB portable solution available, it worked well and is a much-needed tool for many people including me that for various reasons cannot/mustn’t/do not want to have a local DB installation (only). In fact, in my case I have to rely many times on other computers than my laptop meaning that a portable DB version on my stick is really making it worth to use Dropbox.

More than 300 comments on the developer’s website alone, as well as a high number on the various Dropbox forums do in fact confirm the impression of many users in need of a portable sync.

I kindly ask you to escalate the ticket to the highest point possible in order to start an official collaboration between Nick and Dropbox and allow him to provide the service, which makes your DB an even more valuable tool.
    Looking forward for your reply

    Best regards
    (…)

  124. Hey Nick,
I think you’re doing a awesome job. Whilst I am waiting for your new release, I am just doing local backups to another drive. It makes me realize how awesome your app is! Thanks again!

Ignore the whiners. It is your own valuable time that you are setting aside to do this work. I bet half the moaners have never donated a cent!

    Cheers
    Liz

  125. Thanks for all your work with Dropboxportableahk. I find it amazing that not Dropbox value your work more and actually try to help solve the problem. Thanks for your patience in getting the software to work again.

    • I did.. :)

In fact, I made the first steps for this and cleaned up a bit a year ago, but I don’t feel compfortable sharing the code at the moment.
Maybe I will later this year, when I got more time.

  126. Are you looking for Beta testers? I’d love to volunteer!!! Dropbox Portable is an invaluable tool in my work, allowing me to have a corporate and personal Dropbox on my work machine. I’m waiting its return!!!

  127. > Die Installation von DropboxPortableAHK funktioniert nun wieder und Dropbox startet danach einwandfrei.
    Großartige Neuigkeiten! Bin gern Beta-Tester.

  128. Many thanks for your excellent work. Without DbAHK I wouldn’t have auto syncing on my works machine – I’m not allowed admin rights needed to install any package – portable software is a must for me.

Anyhow, I too will be happy to beta test if needed and a donation will be coming your way shortly.

    Cheers

  129. I would also love to volunteer as a beta tester. I use it almost 4 to 5 days a week. I use it on about 5 different systems with and without dropbox on the machine.

  130. Thanks Nick for your great work. I checked every hour to see if the updated released is available. I would be glad to be a beta tester for new release.

  131. This is amazing news! Thank you so very much for creating such an amazing and indispensable product and for all your dedication and hard work, especially as of late. If you would like a not-so-technically-savvy person who somehow manages workarounds such as DPAHK as a Beta tester, I’m your gal! Otherwise, I’ll anxiously await the update. Thank you again and donation coming your way. Cheers!

  132. Thanks Nick for the incredible work! This app is really tops for my work. I made a donation a couple of weeks ago to support your development work. How do I download the new Beta release please? Thanks.
    Regards.
    - Enrico

  133. Hey Nick! I would like to thank you for your portable version of dropbox. Because my school doesn’t allow admin rights for computers, I couldn’t install the normal dropbox on the school computer for coding at school and at home. (I’m learning java atm). Anyways, if I had a way of earning money, I would totally donate to you. (I’m 15) Anyways, thanks a lot for this and where could I get the link for the beta? :)

  134. Hi Nick,

I’ve been refreshing your pages for days and today I am very pleased to know you could make it! Great!
Are you willing to share your beta version soon? I would love to test it myself.

    Thanks and congrats!

  135. Where can I find the link for downloading? It would be great to make it free for everyone. Or where can I sign up for an email?

I really love your program…and of course need for my work.

    Kind regards

  136. Hi,

  137. Hi Nick
Can I try to test the beta version? I’ve been refreshing your pages for days. I am very pleased to know you could make it!
    Thank you very much

  138. Hi Nick
Thanks for your effort. Actually I already take care your website for a few days, the program is very convenient for my work, so I looking forward to the new version release, would I join the beta version test? by the way, when will release the final version?

  139. Bonjour,

  145. I’d be very pleased to try the beta version.
This app is great for me and I want to thank you for your huge effort you make.
    Thanks

    Vielen lieben Dank!

  147. Ich habe gerade dir was Geld gespendet.

  148. Please can you send me an e-mail with the link? I cannot live anymore without my Dropbox Portable ! Thank you very much for your precious work

  149. Impressive work, as everybody can see from the huge number of posts and persons that regularly check this thread.

I can also help testing the beta version.

  150. Please, can someone provide this long waiting link. I didn’t receive message with link (or maybe I delete unintentionally).

    Help, please!

    Thanks.

  151. Me too, me too! :o)
Can you also send me the Beta-Version link, I’d really love to test it!
Thanks for your effort – keep on rocking!
    Lars

  152. I think DropboxPortableAHK is a marvellous program and i’d like to test the new beta version, thank you for your great work!

  154. Is it possible that someone send me the link for the beta version, please. I subscribed days ago but i did nont received the link

    may mil remi.dumas[AT]gmail[DOT]com

  155. I would be very happy to receive a beta link.

Realising how invaluable this application is as I head towards end of year at university!

  156. Can anyone post the link to the beta version, I get wanting to control how many get it, but there is a lot of us been waiting patiently for this to be fixed. As soon as I get it and I see it working I will give a donation for your hard work Nick.

  157. I would be thrilled to assist in the beta testing. I never realized how dependant I was on DPAHK until it went down. I will also send in a donation soon.

Thank you very much for all you have done, all you continue to do, and for what will come.

    • Saw this happen to me once. Might have something to do with some script related to AHK timing out. If starting over doesn’t fix it then try deleting the .dbfiles and restoring from the beta zip file.

    • This happens if you try to use the Beta version with your current DropboxPortableAHK setup.
As I said in the beta announcement, this is not handled correctly, yet.

  158. Link wrking but when I try to change proxy setting, just after DropBox starts (and after portable version wizard) it says it cannot connect. I use socks5 proxy and dropbox proxy must be different from system proxy.

  159. Everything went fine up to the point it tried to download Drop Box. I guess that site is blocked at work, which is the main reason why I use your app in the first place.

  160. I tried to install the beta, but when it got to running the dropbox install, it half removed everything on my desktop and when I looked on my C: drive, I had two desktops, and two My Docs. It’s almost as if it was creating another user account within the same account. Anyways, I still tried to go through with the setup, but in the end Dropbox kept saying it could not find my folder (even though it was the correct path). Upon reboot/logoff it restored my desktop and all my settings, but DBPAHK was still not setup. I re-ran the setup with multiple variations in settings with the same result. No love today from DBPAHK… :(

    • I saw the same on my end and was a little confused at first. Took a few restarts but was able to get it going but only after deleting the .dbfiles directory and restoring it from the beta download. Once I did that the setup went right through. Scared me for a second when I saw all of my icons disappear.

I had tried doing a compare between what I already had in the .dbfiles and what’s in the download and then just copying/updating things over but DropboxPortableAHK kept insisting that Dropbox had not finished setting up. Not sure if it was because I had my AHK settings password protected but assumed that something was not right with my previous installation attempts prior to the beta. In any case everything started working correctly once I deleted and restored that .dbfiles directory.

Happy to FINALLY have this working. Just added a shortcut to AHK into my startup menu so that it’s already running when I login.

      Thanks Nic!

    • Thanks David, I’ll have to try that…I just realized as well that when the setup completed unsuccessfully, it delete my ENTIRE db folder with all my files…it’s just a good thing that I had a backup. Just a warning to anyone trying this, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP! :)

    • Heared that from another beta tester, never experienced the issue, though.
Might be because Dropbox kills the Windows Explorer after their setup has completed.

  162. I can only join in asking for the Beta…

As it sounds to me most would want it.. lol.. skip the Beta we are all desperate to get something working, even if there are a few bugs.

  163. I would also be thrilled to have a link to the beta if possible. I was also curious if the current version of the utility will update to the official new version automatically once you have an official release that fixes the problem.

  164. I keep seeing Dropbox trying to upgrade. Not sure if it’s supposed to be doing that since there are entries in the changelog for preventing the upgrade. Version that runs with DBPAHK is 2.4.11 and current version of DB is 2.6.33. Does “Dropbox update prevention” mean the “Upgrading” notification will always be displayed when either hovering over the Dropbox icon on the taskbar or when clicking on it?

    • There is no update prevention for versions after 2.4.11, yet. I think I have found a method to block all future updates and will put it into the next beta version.

For any version with update prevention, the ‘Upgrading Dropbox’ message will not be displayed.

    • If Dropbox never upgraded itself, then the ‘basic’ update prevention that works on many (most?) systems and is suited for all versions works on your system. The ‘upgrading Dropbox’ message will disappear automatically after 15 minutes or if you pause and resume the syncing from the tray icon.

    • Thanks for the quick reply. So far so good nothing has gone wrong after having to jump through a few hoops during installation. I assume that’s the only point of contention right now, which I’m sure is a big one. Keep up the good work Nick. Don’t let the haters get to you. I know we developers can get hammered when people don’t get what they want but sometimes it’s for the better. :)

  165. wundervoll – keep going.

  166. Hi Nick, thx for the beta! just some quick feedback the ‘sync and go’ seems to be broken atm, DB finishes and DBAHK shows the ‘up to date’ message but DB doesn’t get closed.
if you then close DB AHK happily ejects the USB
hopefully this feedback is of use for you :)

  167. “The beta will go public with the next version, which will probably be the day after tomorrow” it’s been 3 days :(

  168. No problem to wait a day more but please update the 3day old post which says “only 2 days remains” in order to avoid message like these ;)

  169. I’m not sure why people are moaning about it not being released yet, if they want it so bad they should make it themselves. Nick is doing his best!

  170. People, why are you complaining and whining?!
Nick is making an application that is FREE and you still complain?
It will be done when it will be done, when Nick have time to do it.
Remember, app is free which means Nick has other (paid) job to do in his life together with other life activities.
    Grow up people.
    …and to Nick, thumb up.

  171. Hello,

Nick doesn’t need defending as he is doing a great work here. But just some info I observed for those who are waiting:

short answer: there seems to be a bug with the current version of Dropbox.exe, not Nick’s package, that seems to be affecting people. Also, beta-testing people are getting issues when trying to treat this as a normal upgrade of DBPAHK.

Also: This isn’t a small change Nick is making – it’s a major change to his program. Before he was using an unencrypted version of the database. Now Dropbox will no longer allow that to happen. He’s having to create a way to decrypt on the fly and upload it. *And* Dropbox also made some changes on their end too after Heartbleed and apparently introduced some bugs as well that is causing issues with the beta testers.

If the beta testing is any indication, this page would soon be filled with “Nick, your program just blew up my desktop” and “Nick, DBPAHK cannot connect” posts if it were released right now. From what I can tell, he is working on it and hopefully Dropbox will also fix their issue shortly too so people won’t freak out when it is released. :)

    Roz

  172. Nick

You are doing a great job, and I appreciate your efforts, your tool allows me to easily run two instances of dropbox on my work pc. I look forward to hearing that everything is back up and running! Keep up the good work.

    Will

  173. There may be a (longer) delay than Nick anticipated when he posted the ETA but rest assure that he is working on it. From the quick responses to problems reported by beta testers, I am still amazed that he is putting that much time and effort in what essentially is a free program. I am hoping that the small donations made by a large number of users will add up big to compensate for some of his time. Because, I know for sure my paltry dollars wouldn’t have been enough to pay for the time he spent looking through pages and pages of debug files!

  174. Hi,

I would like to know if we need to download a new applicaton or if it will work with the same appliction we have already installed ?

    Thanks

    • menie69, I don’t know what the final release will be like but for beta testing, we downloaded a complete program and re-installed new; we can still use the same Dropbox files.

    • You will receive it as an update to your existing installation when you start up DropboxPortableAHK. During the update, DropboxPortableAHK will take care of everything and will let you use your Dropbox again afterwards.

I am looking into a solution so you don’t even have to go through the setup routine to link your Dropbox account, but I don’t know if this will work.

  175. Meh… I bet this guy already had a working version since a couple weeks now, he’s just holding the release to milk the donation cow!

Just make it a payed app and release it already. I’m sure your revenue will be greater than what you’re earning with your actual scheme.

    • I will not even think about releasing the current version to the public as a paid application. I do not feel comfortable to provide a beta version, because there are still issues that might look odd to a non tech savvy user and will cause hundreds of mails in my inbox.

If you want to volunteer for managing my support requests, feel free to do so, but I doubt you would even be willing to reply to a single mail.

  176. I cannot believe how demanding people can be who are expecting Nick to resolve this. He is doing this more or less for FREE. If you want a solution faster, then develop one yourself or just STFU already and be grateful that he is even looking at this in the first place. Most recent obnoxious person being “Licenciado”. Unreal…..
Nick, I just hope these nasty people aren’t discouraging you. I think what you’ve already done as a free service has been amazing.

  177. Keep up the good work….can you count me in on the beta still? I’ve got a large project where we need to put for 5 users…would be great to get this going again.

  178. Deep thanks for all your work, Nick, and good luck four your efforts that are so useful for many of us!
What a pity Dropbox guys are not clever enough… There are so many sad samples of where this kind of mistakes lead autist companies to…
NIck, I wish some day you would be able to shift towards opensource. It will do even more valuable your efforts.

  179. Thanks a lot for your continued great work. Please don’t be disappointed by comments from some impatient people. Beta 2 is just got better. Thanks Nick.

  180. Hey Nick, Thanks for keeping up the hard work.

A while back you had mentioned “I will contact everyone who donated since April and was not part of the beta program anyway during the next hours, they should have an opportunity to see the current version if they want to.”

I donated a while back (5/1) and I never heard anything from you. Would it be possible to get a copy of whatever you currently have? I can email you the payment confirmation number if you’d like. If you’re within a few days of a public release, then don’t worry about it.

Thanks again for all the hard work!

  181. I think Nick has cheated money without concluding anything, the problem was not so complex, guys let’s give back the stolen goods, this is gone. there is no beta

    • If only there were some way to make sure the program never works for specific users. How ungrateful. And impatience does not excuse it.

  182. For those who donated and didn’t receive the beta link, maybe check your spam filter? I’m a gmail user and Nick’s emails had gone to spam.

    Many thanks to Nick!

  183. Hi Nick,

  184. Only found out this problem when I discovered my files were not sync. Give up after waited few months for a solution which problem still exist. Now using Syncdocs (which is portable) with Google Drive.

Portable is one thing, reliability is another.

    • @ABuNeNe, I suppose you expect everything in life for free and complain when free stuff doesn’t suit you. If you need business continuity then you are an utter fool to rely on a single private individual. Your message tells me more about you than you realize.

  186. DropboxPortableAHK v1.6.8.2 appears to have been killed again by Dropbox. They’ve ended old versions and check the version number during initial setup. Now if you try a fresh install, you’ll get a message “You’re using an old version of Dropbox. Please download the latest version at “.
From there you can’t proceed and DropboxPortable won’t run anymore. New update needed.

  187. Received mail from Dropbox and says DropboxPortable v1.6.8.2 is an old version and next week will stop working.
Will he continue working DropboxPortable v1.6.8.2?

  191. Hi
I manage to get this to work.
Copied files from a Dropbox-installation I had on another computer to the location on my USB (exe, dlls etc, to the same folders on the USB) (I had already installed the 1.8.2 version), Change names on the DLL-s to ..24 instead of ..14 (the ones that had the same names in the USB-folder as the ones from the Dropbox installation, i did not overwrite those files) I ran the ne dropbox.exe, I get a popup to login to my dropbox, it started to sync at once, worked well for me at least.

  192. Can you update the status of DropboxPortableAHK? I stopped using it months ago, but would love to go back… I’m not sure if you’re even still working on it or if you’ve abandoned the project. Please update and let the community know. Thanks so much!
