Since a few days, the Dropbox version used in DropboxPortableAHK can’t connect to the Dropbox servers and shows a red cross on its tray icon saying “Can’t establish a secure connection”.
During new setups, the Dropbox setup starts with an error saying the proxy configuration is not correct. This is the same issue.
This issue might be connected to the recently discovered Heartbleed OpenSSL bug, but without an official word from Dropbox I cannot say for sure what is going on. I have contacted the Dropbox guys and am waiting for their response which hopefully will not take too long.
It looks like all Dropbox versions after 1.1.45 still work fine, so either Dropbox decided to pull the plug on old versions or they use a different way of connecting to their servers in versions after 1.1.45.
Until I got a reply from Dropbox, there is nothing I can do about this issue, sorry. Please be patient, I will publish an update on the site as soon as I got anything from Dropbox.
Update (17.04.14):
I got a reply from Dropbox today. They said they updated their security and that’s why old Dropbox clients can not connect to their server anymore.
This was what was already suspected by many of you.
I sent them a reply for any possible solution for newer clients and hope to hear back from them soon.

Yesterday, I received a reply from Dropbox again. It basically says that Dropbox version 1.1.45 is dead and will never work again. Also, they will not assist me in changing the Dropbox path on newer versions.
During the next days, I will investigate if it is possible to either decrypt the Dropbox database settings and use them on another computer or repackage the Dropbox client to not use an encrypted database at all.
Anyone willing to help, feel free to do some research 🙂

Good news, everyone! I am able to set the Dropbox path on encrypted Dropbox databases. This means, we can now use the latest available Dropbox client software 🙂
I only did a few rough tests to confirm that it works and have not a working DropboxPortableAHK release, yet. If everything goes well, we will be back on track again next week.

Just a quick status update after long hours of work today 😉
I think that it should now be pretty straight forward (logic wise, not time wise) to create a working solution using a Dropbox version up to 2.4.x.
During my tests today, my 2.4.11 setup updated itself to 2.6.18 and nothing worked anymore 🙁 So I spent the last hours trying to find the reason for that and can now say that I think I will also get it to work on versions up to 2.6.18. However, the preparation for this will require a few additional hours during the next days.

I ran into a few issues during the last two days, which made me scream at my screen, until I finally found the reason for these today. This took longer than expected, so the new version is not quite ready, yet.

The setup process works again and Dropbox starts up just fine afterwards.

Please do not ask for beta invites, this is not a public beta until I resolved some issues concerning the setup, as some people get confused how to set it up.
I will contact everyone who donated since April and was not part of the beta program anyway during the next hours, they should have an opportunity to see the current version if they want to.
The beta will go public with the next version, which will probably be the day after tomorrow. Any beta version will update itself to the next stable version, once it gets released, which will hopefully happen during the next days.
Please understand that I don’t want to spread the beta too much at this point, because there are still some issues that I’d like to fix before it goes public. There are only two days left, so please be patient 🙂

Dropboxportable has been very useful in managing and sharing my files. I hope this gets fixed very soon because not being able to run dropbox on a portable platform is very inconvenient.
I am searching for a temporary alternative but none has really come up with dropboxportable’s usability.

It’s too bad, although Dropbox is a nice cloud service, we need third party apps like AHK to get it portable.
As alternative to using Dropbox portable via AHK, it’s an option to use Dropbox on your android phone.
I installed Dropsync (not the official Dropbox which, same as the desktop version, is way too limited) on my android device.
In the office where I can’t connect to the Dropbox server, I can use my phone via USB.

Dropsync is nice, but you really need a phone with a lot of space or a big SD.
To bad Samsung with kitkat caved in to standard Android, now basically you can’t use dropsync on any folder in your sd anymore, you can’t use any app including basic filemanagers on your sd anymore (only readonly).
Still considering if to root (solves the problem) or what to do.

Apparently the Samsung/KitKat issue in DropSync has been fixed as of version 2.5.13. I’m running it on a couple of devices and it’s working well.
Dropsync does NOT work on a SGS5 on a external SD card (at the time of writing).

DropboxPortableAHK uses always Dropbox version 1.1.45, no matter what DropboxPortableAHK version is used.
You can not use DropboxPortableAHK with a newer Dropbox client.

Using 1.6.8.0, same error message. Seems they want to kill dp. It is a nice little solution along with KompoZer to host a personal homepage. But business admins more and more are blocking dropbox-URL’s.

Bei mir tritt der Fehler in der Firma seit der Umstellung auf Win7 auf (wobei es noch einige Tage funktionierte). Mit dem Programm “CarotDAV” kann ich nach Eintrag der Proxy-Daten auf die Dropbox zugreifen, mit diesem Programm ist allerdings keine Synchronisation möglich.

I’ve had a dropbox personal account for a while and then my work setup a corp account. PortableAHK was perfect for the corp account so i could have both running on my work PC and home PC. Recently, ive notice our corp account offering the ability to connect my personal account. I wonder if this has anything to do with portableahk not working any more?
Probably not, this feature has already existed for some time, but we cannot be sure without a official word from Dropbox.

It looks to me like Dropbox is setting things up so that you can connect to your personal account as well as a business account so that they can pull the plug on portable solutions like dbpahk. It’s not in dropbox’s best interest to be allowing people to set up as many dummy personal accounts as they want. They’re trying to drive people to use their paid service to get more storage space. It only makes sense.
I don’t think the few people that really use many free accounts to avoid paying for more space matter to Dropbox. There probably are not many that go through the hassle of managing 5+ running Dropboxes just to save the money.
I agree with with Nick. This is not about saving money by having multiple accounts and being able able to run it in one PC. For me it is about convenience. Being able to carry the dropbox in a USB drive and run it in other computers without the need to install.
I agree too. For me it’s about being able to run DB where I can’t install it and running multiple paid accounts at the same time. It’s not worth the hassle of creating multiple 2GB accounts just to cheat the system. Besides, DB probably wants it so they can claim a big user base.
Nick, THANKS so much for DBPAHK! You made something that many people need and no one else made for DB or any other cloud service. I hope DB works with you on this and get this resolved soon.

I have a paid Dropbox account which I use for my business.
However, 99% of my time I work in customers offices where I can’t install or access Dropbox.
So to have to files I need for my work with me, I need a portable solution.
I would be willing to pay extra if Dropbox would provide a solution for this.
I agree with Nick as well! As I re-read my post, I realized it did not come across as I intended. I also find the most benefit in the portability it provides. I sure hope dropbox will work wtih Nick to re-enable his awesome software.
This is a big disappointment and I hope a fix is found. DropboxPortableAHK is absolutely awesome, and now that it doesn’t run anymore I am very disappointed. I am a consultant and I work on various machines that are locked down. With DropBoxPortableAHK I was able to access my files when dropbox.com was restricted by the firewall. Now that I can’t use this tool I can’t connect to my 100GB of DropBox files.

One other option to getting to those Dropbox files on a locked down computer is to use CarotDAV. While it doesn’t provide auto syncing like Dropbox, it does allow you to download and upload files directly to Dropbox and is a portable solution, requiring no installation.
Again, I hope Dropbox allows this wonderful program and service to continue.

I’ve been using DBPAHK for a long time, thanks a ton. I use it on my PC because I have a shared free dropbox account with 3 friends that we all have for sharing files etc, then I have my own personal one which I paid for that I store all my stuff on. Now I have to drop one it seems which really sucks. Thanks for your hard work, and if anyone knows a solution to my problem please reply!
Wenn man nur eine zweite instanz von dropbox nutzen will, kann man dies recht einfach handhaben.
Man installiert bei einem anderen Nutzer des (windows)PCs ebenfalls Dropbox und koppelt dies mit dem gewünschten anderem Account. Dann kann man diese Dropbox von seinem standard PC-Nutzernamen aus mit “als anderer Benutzer ausführen” aus dem Kontextmenü oder über den befehl “runas” starten (vorher den korrekten Dateipfad ausfindig machen). Dort den passenden PC-Nutzer samt Kennwort eingeben (Achtung, ohne Kennwort ist dies nicht möglich) und schon läuft dropbox ein zweites mal, die icons sind aber leider identisch.
Nutze die portable version auch seit ca. 2 Jahren und war immer sehr zufrieden, da man an der Universität nicht mal eben das adminkennwort bekommt nur um dropbox zu installieren. Und ich so auch alles auf einem Stick mit mir rumtragen kann.
Ich hoffe natürlich, dass es eine Lösung für das Problem gibt, bin aber eher pessimistisch, da ja nur die ältere dropbox-Version genutzt werden kann aufgrund der nicht verschlüsselten und somit manipulierbaren config.

This is a terrific tool and I wish Dropbox is not considering shutting down the access. I just sent a support request to DB to provide a solution ASAP. This is the only way I’ve been able to use my DB files at work without having to install the software. I would pay for the app if you ever decide to launch it commercially. Keep up the good work!

My entire life is flashing before me 🙁 My work computer does not allow the installation of dropbox and this portable version has been a godsend. If there’s no solution to this then I’ll probably need to switch to Google Drive where there is still a portable solution.

The site you posted is in Portugese, which I don’t understand. I never heared of this cloud storage provider before, so I don’t think there is much demand for it. I’d rather go with Google Drive or another more established service, but I have not checked out any other desktop client beside Dropbox.

If you don’t kown, meo is a multinational telecomunications provider! I’m suspect to tell this, but is a trusty enterprise and with some tecnologicals inovations!

The service is fairly new is not very well known outside of Portugal (at least for now), but the team is friendly and open to third party solutions (e.g., their Linux clients are open source: https://github.com/sapo/meocloud-cli).
The apps (with the exception of the web app for now) support various languages and the desktop apps support many features you would expect from Dropbox:
– Delta synchronization (based on rsync)
– Data deduplication (only what was changed is transferred)
– Proxy support/bandwidth control
– Symlinks (even on Windows)
– Windows explorer Integration
You could give it a spin and check it for yourself 🙂

Even i had make one good sugestion of cloud provider, i like very much the dropbox service, even more usinh it with your aplication!
Sorry for being a “pain in the ass”… but consider to portable your software to other cloud providers! MeoCloud is a great solution! If many people of these coments look better to this solution (Meo Cloud), starting imediatly with 16Gb, expandeblas to 32Gb free with invitations, most of tem should / clould change of cloud provider!
Mean while, i will wait for MeoCloud team to make a portable version of the software! 🙁

If DropboxPortableAHK becomes obsolete, I will cancel my subscriptions with Dropbox. I currently have 3 paid accounts with Dropbox and have no need for their service if I cannot sync and access them all from any computer that I am on.
I have registered my complaint with Dropbox on all 3 accounts as well as their forum, which I noticed they have not responded to.
Same situation here. I am a paying customer. Since my portable computer is an ASUS EP121 tablet I have to use a permanently mounted 128gb SD card for file storage and I have used DropBox to keep my work safe and synced. The loss of DropboxPortableAHK have made my work hell. I am going to have to cancel my paid subscription and look for other solutions.
I hope Dropbox cooperates, but their complete silence so far is an ominous sign. I closed my Dropbox account because of this, and found TeamDrive to be an excellent alternative: Not only is the client truly truly cross-platform (I use linux at home, iOS on the road, and Windows at work), they offer a completely portable client for USB. To give Nick some space to update and for those who need something portable with the opinion of automatic sync I suggest a workaround (works fine for me):
Sign in to TeamDrive, you’ll get 2GB for free.
Install TeamDrivePortable on the PC without admin access.
Configure TeamDrive that the monitored folder is your DropBox folder (e. g. MyDropBox).
This way you can continue using Dropbox as well as TeamDrive. You stay ready to use DropBoxPortableAHK again when a updated version is available.
Here you can download TeamDrive 3 portable with 2.25 GB for free, latest version 3.2.0 (771) with 18.6 MB http://www.teamdrive.com/de/ref/rz7j2mqu . Another temporary replacement for DropBoxPortableAHK is Cubby.portable. Cubby also is able to sync your DropBox folder in the meantime, until DropBoxPortableAHK will be able to sync again. Cubby can sync every folder on your PC on different drives similar to TeamDrive.

I use Cubby as a portable app since several month, and it works very reliable and more flexible than DropBoxPortableAKH because
(A) you are free in selecting every folder on your PC and
(B) data are highly encrypted and
(C) you have 5GB for free (up to 23 GB: 1GB for each friend using Cubby)
For me it was not very difficult to find out, how to use Cubby as portable app:
Copy folder from C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\cubby e.g. to …\LiberKey\myApps and Cubby works as a very good portable app
So my information is a very useful replacement for DropBox, and I think DropBox would be good advised to see this competitor. If DropBox will not as soon as possible offer a portable service, many paying DropBox Users will migrate to cubby. My opinion is, that nobody knows, that Cubby IS a very good PORTABLE replacement for Dropbox.

One week without DPAHK. It’s terrify!! I have 3 computers desynchronized.
I use DPAHK with one partition protected with deepfreeze, and other partition with portable software. DPAHK is the best solution, fast, secure and use low memory.

My Dropbox uploads and downloads at snail’s pace (around 7 KB/sec) even though I already set the settings to not limit the speed. This has been happening for weeks now. Is this still connected to the security update Dropbox implemented?
Allway Sync ‘n’ Go has a portable version and is able to sync a Dropbox folder: it’s my temporary workaround.

Just saw the April 17 update at top of this page that Dropbox have made “security changes”, so I have a question for readers:
If your machine is running WIN XP SP3 or Win 7 ,firstly, is dropboxPortableAHK failing AND ,secondly, if you answer “yes” can you tell me if the Google Chrome browser will login to your dropbox account on that same machine?
I noticed dropbox.com changed their SSL cert from SHA-1 to SHA-256 signing algorithm, and that change definitely breaks older systems. The above question will help determine if this is the only change. If it is I hope some bright coder can patch dropbox.exe v1.1.45 to work the right way. I’m ready to donate if someone patches it 🙂
(I see little chance dropbox.com want to help people to use DPAHK or supply the same functionality in their product).

Thank you for the work you had already put into this. I was wondering if you’re planning to try to fix it or not? If you can get this fixed, I’d be happy to donate! If not, it would be beneficial if you would let me (and probably others) know, so we can switch to another service (I know another cloud service that has an operating portable version, but I will have to switch all my files over if I do that)
I use DBpahk between all the different computers I have to deal with on campus, and having it was a huge benefit, and I would love to have it back.

I will continue to monitor this thread and to hassle dropbox, but I really want and need a portable syncing solution, as my husband and I are taking our show on the road in a couple months. Nomads need dropbox to be portable.
They replied once, but I am still waiting for a follow up response.
Probably DropboxPortableAHK will not work again any time soon. I am thinking about creating a general syncing application that works for multiple cloud storage providers and uses their official API to do its work. This will, however, take a bit and might not work very well for certain providers, because their API is limited in some way.

I just want to add my voice to the many: Dropbox Portable AHK is unique and brilliant. It enhances the benefit of Dropbox for all of us mobile users – the users who are most likely to be IT professionals and have paid accounts with Dropbox (are you listening Dropbox). Take this portability away and Dropbox is less useful. For me it is almost useless without a portable capability as the companies where I work have very strong security policies.
Nick, if you can think of any way to encourage the guys at Dropbox to give you a bit more support then do say. Your work has helped us all so much and it would be good to keep it alive.

Ich habe aktuell die 1.1.45 installiert. Wenn ich eine neuere Version installiere und alles wieder synce, klappt es ganz normal? Ich möchte mich von der tollen App nur ungern verabschieden, allerdings benötige ich definitiv eine funktionierende Lösung.

DropboxPortableAHK funktioniert nur mit Dropbox Version 1.1.45.
Eine normale Dropbox Installation mit einer Version nach 1.1.45 funktioniert, jedoch nicht portabel.

I think that maybe if you update your opening post to request your fans contact Dropbox support to raise a ticket requesting a immediate response (directly to what your asking) we can get an official idea on if this will be a easy fix or expect something lengthier.

I was using AHK 2 years. Thanks.
So now I’ve switched to another portable version “Dropbox Portable 1.2.51 Development Test 2” from http://portableapps.com/node/30683.
Although it’s 2 years old, it is working behind proxy without admin and installing.
And to avoid Dropbox tries to update, you have to replace content of some folder by updated one from regurally installed Dropbox.
What folder and contents, please?
I think this version copies your entire Dropbox folder to the user folder every time you start Dropbox Portable and copies it back to your portable folder after you have shut it down. This might work for the same computer or computers with the same username and Windows version, but it certainly does not work for all situations.
Also, it does not circumvent the encryption of the Dropbox database, so there are a few issues left. That is probably why the author does not support this version anymore.
Anyway, I’m started using that portable version “Dropbox Portable 1.2.51 Development Test 2″ and it’s working at least to some extent.
But I find annoying (and space consuming) its frequent version updating.
So, I would thank you, Lukas, to inform us of what contents and in which folder you have to replace to prevent that undesirable updating.

As Nick already wrotes 1.2.51 copy Dropbox exe files to profile folder and starts it. After closing it deletes them.
It takes some second on start.
And the update:
– all except folder “Bin” from c:\Users\lj1078\AppData\Roaming\Dropbox\ to d:\Program Files\DropboxPortable\Data\Dropbox\”
– all from c:\Users\lj1078\AppData\Roaming\Dropbox\bin\ to d:\Program Files\DropboxPortable\App\Dropbox\”
Nick, (great app etc etc [I’m sure you know how the community feels about you work by now])
However, unless they (DB) have given you a workaround for the config encryption issue (or an unencrypted client that accepts the new cert) aren’t you are a stalemate?
Maybe ‘Dropbox Database Decryptor’ would help (but having a read of their site it doesn’t look easy). Either way anything any of us can do to help (from posted to DB to assistance coding) please feel free to ask. We are here to help as well as use your great software!

For those using DPAHK on a machine because they don’t have admin rights, you can install the standard Dropbox software without any issues (although it said some features were disabled, I haven’t found any problems yet.) As someone who uses the same computer with a specific user account regularly but has no admin privileges , this is a very suitable workaround until DPAHK gets going again.

They just told me that older clients are not able to connect to the server anymore by purpose. Also, they said that it is not possible to modify the Dropbox folder path on versions with encrypted databases (but we will see about that 🙂 ).
The only thing that might go in the direction of helping me is that they advised me to use the official API they provide, but creating a sync application on top of that will be quite challenging, because I would basically have to mimic the Dropbox behavior, which is not even possible completely using the API.

It really annoys me that attitude from dropbox: they don’t give a solution or offer an alternative service, even when it is proved it is useful for many users. What a lack of vision…

Hi Nick, I figured out that DPAHK is using the version written in the ressource of Dropbox.exe to check if it’s 1.1.45. I changed it to 2.6.27 with RessourceHacker and DPAHK tells me that it doesn’t support this version. I guess Dropbox are using a more complex way of preventing version 1.1.45, but in case it’s the case you could try to change the version number in dropbox.exe 1.1.45 and allows DPAHK to use it and see if it connects. My 2 cents contribution. If it doesn’t work (99% likely), hop that you find a better solution.
This is very sad. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any vital information related to this problem, but I think that the Dropbox team will not help you as much as you would like to, because with this software that you’ve developed we have the opportunity to run many accounts in the same computer, with a bigger amount of space in total.

Their API presumably allows all functionality including their sync API. So a program could be written which simply accesses and syncs with the API perhaps?
Obviously a massive undertaking for someone. But possible.
I thought about that already. There are still some things missing in the API, though, to make it easier to accomplish. Also, there are still a few things that are not even possible with the current API, like delta uploads or initialization of an already present Dropbox folder.

It’s a shame that Dropbox wouldn’t help you in some valuable way. This odd and unprofessional behavior of a credible company isn’t applied only on you but also for many people use your app to make a better experience of Dropbox.
Maybe my idea is not revolutionary, but if you find existing problem with DB can’t be solved, I suggest you to try make other portable app for some of the many services like Copy (15 GB free), or hubiC (25 GB free). I mean, Dropbox is my favorite service (I guess many will agree with me), but why to spent your energy and knowledge for some service you don’t even receive any help at all. I’m sure if you find the way to make portable apps for other services most of the people used your AHK will transfer to other services.
At the end, even you resolve the actual problem, who can guarantee that a similar problem will not occur for the very next DB update.

COPY, that would be amazing – it has lots of free data storage and you get lots for referring others. It is by far my favourite cloud storage.

This is sad. I may be wrong, but I believe that many DropboxPortableAHK users are paying for Dropbox service. I think only Dropbox can loose with this attitude.
Google Drive is now selling 100GB for $1.99/month (1TB = $9.99/month). I am now considering moving all my files to Google and subscribe to Insync Plus to use different accounts and support removable drives.
I don’t think Dropbox realizes how many users are paying for multiple Dropbox accounts and using DropboxPortableAHK to sync the multiple accounts (like me). If Dropbox doesn’t start offering some cooperation, I’ll end up canceling my second Dropbox account (maybe both) and move to Google Drive or a similar service.
With that said, the only reason I’m still holding out is because DropboxPortableAHK is such an awesome app that fills a critical need for many Dropbox users. As a former software developer, I have to give kudos to Nick for creating such a great app to begin with. For each person who comments here, there are many others who feel the same but just haven’t commented. I would also be willing to contribute some money if it helped to get this app back up and running again.
I certainly hope there’s a fix soon, because I won’t be able to hold out much longer before I have to switch to another service.

I’ve been checking for updates daily but unfortunately having changed my method of working in line with DBPAHK and with a solution not looking imminent I had reluctantly switched to an alternative which TBH doesn’t work anywhere near as smoothly so I’m keen to move back asap.

Habe gerade auf Cameyo eine funktionierende DropBox portable 2.6.7.0 gefunden. Ein Test auf einem Windows XP Notebook bisher ohne DropBox war erfolgreich. Hier kann man die portable DropBox downloaden: http://online.cameyo.com/public?filter=DropBox .
Bei mir klappte es jedoch nur, wenn der Ordner der zu synchronisierenden Dateien auf Eigene Dateien\Dropbox war. Das dürfte jedoch an den Verzeichnisrechten liegen.
Nähere Informationen über Cameyo, mit dem man (fast) alle Programme selbst portabel machen kann: http://www.chip.de/downloads/Cameyo_44910995.html. Ich holte mir (ohne Erfolg) auch Evernote portable von Cameyo: http://online.cameyo.com/public?filter=Evernote . Der Download wurde jedoch von Avast mit einer Virus-Meldung abgebrochen. Also Vorsicht bei anderen Downloads von http://online.cameyo.com/public als DropBox. DropBox 2.6.7.0 wurde von Avast als OK befunden und es funktioniert auch. Wenn diese portable DropBox wirklich in jeder Sicht funktioniert, so sieht es aus meiner Sicht momentan aus, könnte sich Nick theoretisch die weitere Entwicklung von DropBoxPortableAHK sparen, oder diese einfach mit Cameo von jeder neuen DropBox-Version selbst erzeugen. Es gibt auf http://online.cameyo.com/public sogar SpiderOak portable.
Ist nicht portabel, sondern erlaubt nur die Ausführung von Dropbox auf einem Computer, bei dem der Dropbox Ordner am gleichen Ort wie bei einer regulären Installation liegt. Sobald man dieses Setup auf einen anderen Computer verschieben will, funktioniert es nicht mehr.

I did not have much time to test everything, but I think it will run pretty smooth just like before.
When I first found out about this, I heard it was running on an old version of the Dropbox software, & I thought that’s probably because development on it stopped & it wouldn’t work. The day I decided to try it out anyway was the same day this announcement was made that it wasn’t working. I’ve checked back every day since then for updates.
I hope the new version is working soon.
I been using this for about 5 months and use it at least twice a week. I found a work around until nick fixes the problem but I would love to go back to dropbox portable when it gets fix it will be less headache for me when it works again. Can’t wait until you get the new version out.

Just a few lines to comment you my opinion that, as long as it works with the current DB server security, it’s not necessary that your DBPAHK version uses a very recent Dropbox version and even less that it be “updatable” (for it could happen again (like with 2.6 and 2.4) that a new future updated DB version ceases to work). If any future change in the DB server makes your currently chosen DB client version incompatible, then you’ll be able to investigate it and update your DBPAHK version. Anyway, probably all this is already obvious to you.
What I think would really be very convenient is a way to prevent DB auto-updates, as you were already attempting before the current issue.

Being someone of a geeky nature, do you think you could share what was the frustrating road block? It wasn’t a lost semicolon, was it? 🙂
There were three parts to the issue.
The first one was to recompile SQLite3 as a dynamic library, which was trickier than I thought. It worked fine in Visual Studio and I could run my test program (written in C) just fine with it. Integrating it with DropboxPortableAHK did not work though, the functions of the library couldn’t be accessed, because they were not exported correctly.
The second issue was an incompatibility between Unicode (used in DropboxPortableAHK) and Ansi (in my C wrapper functions inside the SQLite3 library). This was resolved rather quickly by comparing the bytes in memory 🙂
The last issue took me a while. I got weird errors when trying to access the database on succeeding call to the library, which I could not explain. The issue here was that the memory of the library and DropboxPortableAHK were not in the same address space. After loading the library into the memory space of DropboxPortableAHK, it worked.
I hope your geeky-ness is satisfied after this explanation 🙂

I have ran into the Unicode vs ANSI problem before – you want to pull your hair out because the extra bytes aren’t displayed and looks EXACTLY the same!

Because we have severe ICT problems in our faculty at the moment, I just realized how much of a vallued fallback DropboxAHK was, until it stopped functioning. Dropbox basically are forcing us to install their bloated crap. I am amazed that portable apps are not the norm, with local configuration files, so that we can just copy and paste a folder and we are done, no need to manually adjust any settings each time we install the app. I understand they do it in the interest of workstations with multiple user accounts, but in fairness 99% of users only have one account on their PCs. I realise some apps that need to run as services or rely on system components cannot be portable, but plenty of apps that could be portable and are not including DropBox. Idiots.

I thought I could send out a beta version, yesterday, but it wasn’t ready to be used.
Unfortunately, I don’t have much time I can put into this during weekdays, so the progress during the week is kinda slow.
It is hard to give an estimate for when it’s ready, because I don’t know if I already caught all the big issues.
Hey Nick.. I can see that with every upgrade in dropbox, the portable app may have chances of faltering. So even by working hard (That you already are doing), you develop a solution for current version, the problem may again recur the next time db upgrades. I suggest that with such a wonderful, useful and popular application that you have developed, you should meet db guys and form some kind of partnership/JV. I am sure DB will be interested in incorporating PortableAHK as part of their standard dropbox feature, Do think in this direction coz I guess this is the only permanent solution

Das Problem wurde von Sumit Agarwa sehr schön beschrieben, du wirst in Zukunft immer Probleme haben sobald eine Neue Version herauskommt.
Setz dich mit den Typen zusammen und versuche eine Partnerschaft oder eine spezielle API zu erhalten.

To my knowledge, it is the only DB portable solution available, it worked well and is a much-needed tool for many people including me that for various reasons cannot/mustn’t/do not want to have a local DB installation (only). In fact, in my case I have to rely many times on other computers than my laptop meaning that a portable DB version on my stick is really making it worth to use Dropbox.
More than 300 comments on the developer’s website alone, as well as a high number on the various Dropbox forums do in fact confirm the impression of many users in need of a portable sync.
I kindly ask you to escalate the ticket to the highest point possible in order to start an official collaboration between Nick and Dropbox and allow him to provide the service, which makes your DB an even more valuable tool.

Saw this happen to me once. Might have something to do with some script related to AHK timing out. If starting over doesn’t fix it then try deleting the .dbfiles and restoring from the beta zip file.
This happens if you try to use the Beta version with your current DropboxPortableAHK setup.
As I said in the beta announcement, this is not handled correctly, yet.
Link wrking but when I try to change proxy setting, just after DropBox starts (and after portable version wizard) it says it cannot connect. I use socks5 proxy and dropbox proxy must be different from system proxy.
Everything went fine up to the point it tried to download Drop Box. I guess that site is blocked at work, which is the main reason why I use your app in the first place.
I tried to install the beta, but when it got to running the dropbox install, it half removed everything on my desktop and when I looked on my C: drive, I had two desktops, and two My Docs. It’s almost as if it was creating another user account within the same account. Anyways, I still tried to go through with the setup, but in the end Dropbox kept saying it could not find my folder (even though it was the correct path). Upon reboot/logoff it restored my desktop and all my settings, but DBPAHK was still not setup. I re-ran the setup with multiple variations in settings with the same result. No love today from DBPAHK… 🙁
I saw the same on my end and was a little confused at first. Took a few restarts but was able to get it going but only after deleting the .dbfiles directory and restoring it from the beta download. Once I did that the setup went right through. Scared me for a second when I saw all of my icons disappear.
I had tried doing a compare between what I already had in the .dbfiles and what’s in the download and then just copying/updating things over but DropboxPortableAHK kept insisting that Dropbox had not finished setting up. Not sure if it was because I had my AHK settings password protected but assumed that something was not right with my previous installation attempts prior to the beta. In any case everything started working correctly once I deleted and restored that .dbfiles directory.
Happy to FINALLY have this working. Just added a shortcut to AHK into my startup menu so that it’s already running when I login.

Thanks David, I’ll have to try that…I just realized as well that when the setup completed unsuccessfully, it delete my ENTIRE db folder with all my files…it’s just a good thing that I had a backup. Just a warning to anyone trying this, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP! 🙂
Heared that from another beta tester, never experienced the issue, though.
Might be because Dropbox kills the Windows Explorer after their setup has completed.

I keep seeing Dropbox trying to upgrade. Not sure if it’s supposed to be doing that since there are entries in the changelog for preventing the upgrade. Version that runs with DBPAHK is 2.4.11 and current version of DB is 2.6.33. Does “Dropbox update prevention” mean the “Upgrading” notification will always be displayed when either hovering over the Dropbox icon on the taskbar or when clicking on it?
Once it finished updating and downloading files this message/notification went away.
There is no update prevention for versions after 2.4.11, yet. I think I have found a method to block all future updates and will put it into the next beta version.
For any version with update prevention, the ‘Upgrading Dropbox’ message will not be displayed.
Just to be clear Dropbox itself never actually upgraded it seems. Looks like it’s still on version 2.4.11 but does keep trying to upgrade every now and then.
If Dropbox never upgraded itself, then the ‘basic’ update prevention that works on many (most?) systems and is suited for all versions works on your system. The ‘upgrading Dropbox’ message will disappear automatically after 15 minutes or if you pause and resume the syncing from the tray icon.
Thanks for the quick reply. So far so good nothing has gone wrong after having to jump through a few hoops during installation. I assume that’s the only point of contention right now, which I’m sure is a big one. Keep up the good work Nick. Don’t let the haters get to you. I know we developers can get hammered when people don’t get what they want but sometimes it’s for the better. 🙂

Hi Nick, thx for the beta! just some quick feedback the ‘sync and go’ seems to be broken atm, DB finishes and DBAHK shows the ‘up to date’ message but DB doesn’t get closed.
if you then close DB AHK happily ejects the USB

No, the Sync API is only available on mobile devices and Mac OS X.

Nick doesn’t need defending as he is doing a great work here. But just some info I observed for those who are waiting:
short answer: there seems to be a bug with the current version of Dropbox.exe, not Nick’s package, that seems to be affecting people. Also, beta-testing people are getting issues when trying to treat this as a normal upgrade of DBPAHK.
Also: This isn’t a small change Nick is making – it’s a major change to his program. Before he was using an unencrypted version of the database. Now Dropbox will no longer allow that to happen. He’s having to create a way to decrypt on the fly and upload it. *And* Dropbox also made some changes on their end too after Heartbleed and apparently introduced some bugs as well that is causing issues with the beta testers.
If the beta testing is any indication, this page would soon be filled with “Nick, your program just blew up my desktop” and “Nick, DBPAHK cannot connect” posts if it were released right now. From what I can tell, he is working on it and hopefully Dropbox will also fix their issue shortly too so people won’t freak out when it is released. 🙂

There may be a (longer) delay than Nick anticipated when he posted the ETA but rest assure that he is working on it. From the quick responses to problems reported by beta testers, I am still amazed that he is putting that much time and effort in what essentially is a free program. I am hoping that the small donations made by a large number of users will add up big to compensate for some of his time. Because, I know for sure my paltry dollars wouldn’t have been enough to pay for the time he spent looking through pages and pages of debug files!

menie69, I don’t know what the final release will be like but for beta testing, we downloaded a complete program and re-installed new; we can still use the same Dropbox files.
You will receive it as an update to your existing installation when you start up DropboxPortableAHK. During the update, DropboxPortableAHK will take care of everything and will let you use your Dropbox again afterwards.
I am looking into a solution so you don’t even have to go through the setup routine to link your Dropbox account, but I don’t know if this will work.

Just make it a payed app and release it already. I’m sure your revenue will be greater than what you’re earning with your actual scheme.
Seems unlikely. I think Nick’s at the point that he would pay good money to just to make all this hassle and pain go away. 🙂
I will not even think about releasing the current version to the public as a paid application. I do not feel comfortable to provide a beta version, because there are still issues that might look odd to a non tech savvy user and will cause hundreds of mails in my inbox.
If you want to volunteer for managing my support requests, feel free to do so, but I doubt you would even be willing to reply to a single mail.
I’ll be patient to wait for the new version.

I cannot believe how demanding people can be who are expecting Nick to resolve this. He is doing this more or less for FREE. If you want a solution faster, then develop one yourself or just STFU already and be grateful that he is even looking at this in the first place. Most recent obnoxious person being “Licenciado”. A while back you had mentioned “I will contact everyone who donated since April and was not part of the beta program anyway during the next hours, they should have an opportunity to see the current version if they want to.”
I donated a while back (5/1) and I never heard anything from you. Would it be possible to get a copy of whatever you currently have? I can email you the payment confirmation number if you’d like. If you’re within a few days of a public release, then don’t worry about it.

There was a Beta 2 according to one of the posts.
So I assume there is some development happening.
I think Nick has cheated money without concluding anything, the problem was not so complex, guys let’s give back the stolen goods, this is gone. there is no beta
If only there were some way to make sure the program never works for specific users. How ungrateful. And impatience does not excuse it.

Only found out this problem when I discovered my files were not sync. Give up after waited few months for a solution which problem still exist. Now using Syncdocs (which is portable) with Google Drive.
Portable is one thing, reliability is another.

Hat noch jemand das Problem, dass nach der Installation das Fenster mit der Warnung “Verbindungsfehler. Falls dein Computer die Internetverbindung über einen Proxy-Server herstellt, gibt deine Einstellungen bitte hier ein” kommt? Was kann ich da tun? Vor über einem Monat hat alles geklappt, bei einer Neueinrichtung auf meinem Notebook und anderen PCs nicht mehr….Würde mich wirklich über Hilfe freuen!

DropboxPortableAHK v1.6.8.2 appears to have been killed again by Dropbox. They’ve ended old versions and check the version number during initial setup. Now if you try a fresh install, you’ll get a message “You’re using an old version of Dropbox. Please download the latest version at “.
From there you can’t proceed and DropboxPortable won’t run anymore. New update needed.
Received mail from Dropbox and says DropboxPortable v1.6.8.2 is an old version and next week will stop working.
Will he continue working DropboxPortable v1.6.8.2?
I am working on a fix for this issue, but I don’t know when it will be ready.

I manage to get this to work.
Copied files from a Dropbox-installation I had on another computer to the location on my USB (exe, dlls etc, to the same folders on the USB) (I had already installed the 1.8.2 version), Change names on the DLL-s to ..24 instead of ..14 (the ones that had the same names in the USB-folder as the ones from the Dropbox installation, i did not overwrite those files) I ran the ne dropbox.exe, I get a popup to login to my dropbox, it started to sync at once, worked well for me at least.
